Screen Printing With My Yudu, Cricut Expression and Vinyl
After I got the kids to bed I was able to try and work with the Yudu. My first few attempts were washed down the sink. The first time I did not have the screen wet enough. The second time it was to wet. The third time I said however ever it turns out, I am going to print it.
I am almost embarrassed to show you this but I worked hard on this and I can’t believe that it did not turn out. It is a black t-shirt and hot pink paint. It was a pre made Yudu design. The first ink pass was very very faded, the second pass was still faded but some parts became blotched.
It does look horrible. Like a bleached t-shirt or something. It was a t-shirt that I made for myself. It took me about 4 hours or so to get to this point. I was very frustrated.
I decided to try the vinyl method that I posted about earlier. I am so in love with this method. I made a t-shirt for my niece (Bubbles).
I used my Gypsy and created the vinyl design and it took about 2 seconds. I used a 12×12 piece of black vinyl. The vinyl cut perfect on my cricut. I forgot to take a picture of the before, so here is a picture of the after. I had just finished printing the t-shirt. This is the vinyl adhered to the inner side of the screen.
I left the vinly on my cricut mat. I removed the parts that I wanted to be inked from the design. I then took a large sheet of contact paper and covered the entire vinyl cut. I had about 1 inch all the way around the design of extra contact paper. I used a brayer and rolled over the contact paper to help it adhere to the vinyl. I flipped the entire design over and pealed off the backing of the vinyl. Once it was pealed off I took it over to my Yudu machine and decided where I wanted it on my screen and adhered it. I pealed the corner of the contact paper slowly and removed it from the vinyl. I basically adhered the vinyl to the mesh screen like it was my wall. I covered the parts of the mesh screen still exposed with tape. Screen printed the t-shirt. With one ink pass, this is how it turned out.
The letter are from the Lyrical Letters cricut cartridge and the heart is from the Indie cricut cartridge. Clean up was a snap. I washed the screen with warm water. Pealed off the tape and vinyl. Wiped it down again and put the screen in the Yudu machine to dry. From start to finish with the vinyl method it was about 30 minutes. I love how this shirt turned out. I have some hot-fix rhinestones that I am going to add to it. I know that my niece will love it. I would rather use vinly then the emulsion. I am not going to give up on emulsion though, we are going to learn how to use the liquid stuff. I share more info about that on a later post.
****update***
I was able to finally get the emulsion to work. I wet the screen with a spray bottle. Applied the emulsion and the used the squeegee to get all the air bubbles out. **per a wonderful suggestion from someone on the cricut message board** Flip the screen over and wipe the emulsion with a wet sponge to get it totally wet and get the air bubbles out. It took 2 drying cycles to get totaly dry but it worked perfect. Thank you “14across” from the cricut message board for your help.
Here is a picture of the shirt that I made for my daughter using emulsion. I cut the pop star out from the Hannah Montana Cartridge. I cut in out in black vinyl and it adhered perfectly to the glass and stayed in place to properly burn the into the emulsion. The guitar was a pre-made stencil that you can purchase for the Yudu.
Cutting Vinyl On My Cricut To Use On My Yudu
Recently my friend Lana and I bought a Yudu machine. You can see the great deal that we got on it here. Lana has had it for this past week and loves it. She came to work at midnight the other night to show me the wonderful t-shirts she made. Everyone just raved over the t-shirts and what a nice job she did. She said my ideas are getting better and better. First I talked her into a Cricut Expression, YourStory, Gypsy and now a Yudu. I have been spending a lot of time researching the most cost effective methods of trying to use this machine. I found out just like the cricut accessories, Yudu accessories are not excluded on the Joanns coupon. I had a few 50% off coupons and a bunch of 40% off coupons so I was able to stock up on ink. I am going to try to make my first shirt tomorrow and wanted to check out some YouTube Yudu videos. I want to learn as much as I can because emulsion sheets are not cheap and I don’t want to waste them. I found these 2 videos on Youtube. You kind of have to watch both videos. If you don’t have a lot of time just make a note of how long she has to wait for the emulsion to dry and the timer for the image to burn on the first video.
On this video, Sandy gave the most incredible tip. I almost fell out of my chair.
Her idea is amazing. I have a whole roll of black vinyl that I have not even used yet. In her YouTube comments she noted that she cut the image out on vinyl using her cricut and SCAL. No drying time, No burning image time. Cut the image on your cricut, adhere to underside of screen. Tape edges and screen print like normal. This idea is one I have to try and could be a wonderful money saver. Emulsion sheets are 2 sheets for 19.99 at Joann’s with out a coupon. Even with a 40% off coupon you would be paying $11.99 which is still $6.00 a sheet. I buy my vinyl at www.uscutter.com. A 24″x 10″ roll of Oracle 631 black vinyl is $20.99. (Lots of colors available, most colors are $23.99 per roll) On all the rolls that I have purchased I can cut a minimum of 33 12×24 sheets per roll. 1 Sheet comes to .63 per 12×24 sheet. They offer flat rate shipping of $9.99 per order. Even if you only ordered 1 roll and paid 9.99 shipping it still would cost you .94 per sheet. That is a real money saver against the cost of emulsion, plus you don’t have the dry and image burn time to deal with. I order vinyl with my friend and split the rolls. We get to order more colors that way and it is so much cheaper then buying it at the store. Oracal 631 is the EXACT same stuff that Provocraft packages and sells 2 12×24 sheets for $9.99. I will be trying this method myself but obviously it does work because those t-shirts looked awesome.
Yudu and Accesories, Speaking of Winter and Dinosaur Tracks Cricut Cartridge
A few weeks ago I got an e-mail from a company called Papercraftingpro.com. It was for a 2 day trial membership in there buying program. After that it is 9.99 on month to order from them. On there website they have Yudu, Cricut, Gypsy, Cuttlebug, Quickkutz, CGull Totes, Zutter BIA, Yourstory and more. There was also a 15% discount coupon off the first order. The prices that they offered just seemed to be to good true so I did a search of them on the net. I read that a few people had ordered from them on the Cricut.com MB and received there orders.
I told my friend Lana about this site and that they had really great prices but that I was a little nervous to order form them. I told her I wanted the Yudu and they have it for 137.00 and with the coupon it would be 15% off. We decided that we would order the Yudu and share it and split the cost of the machine. It is something we both wanted but we are not going to make T-Shirts or screen print everyday. Sharing it just makes sense to us and we each would buy our own accessories like ink and stuff. We paid through paypal with a credit card.
This is what we ordered, and I am not kidding about the price. This is really what we paid, it is a screen print of the invoice. Even ohmycrafts.com does not have these kind of prices on the Yudu, Speaking of Winter Cricut Cartridge or Dinosaur Tracks Cricut Cartridge.

Whooooo HOOOOOOO YUDU!!!!!!!!!!
Today our order came!!! The only thing that I did not like was that they opened the Yudu box and stuck everything else that we ordered in the box. Nothing got damaged or anything but the order does show shipping for 2 boxes and they only sent it in one. The price we paid though can not be beat anywhere so I am not going to complain. No where can you find the Yudu for 137.00 and buy 3 packs of emulsion sheets and 3 mesh screens for what we paid. One pack of emulsion sheets at the store are 19.99 and one mesh screen 24.99. I was amazed at the price of the Gyspy. It is listed at 195.00 and $9.16 shipping.
Since I have to work for the rest of the week and Lana has the next 2 days off she is going to try it out first and tell me what she thinks of it. I have next Sunday and Monday off so I am going to try and make something then and play with the new cartridges.
